Appreciation post: The old trick of mailing a box home from Tokyo still works
I used to cram everything into a carry on to avoid checked bag fees, but I bought too many souvenirs last trip. A hostel owner told me to just mail a box of stuff to myself via Japan Post's surface mail. It cost about $35 for a 5kg box and took 2 months, but it beat a $150 extra bag fee. Anyone have a cheaper slow mail trick from other countries?

Mailing a box home for two months feels like a weird game of surprise shopping with your past self. You'll have completely forgotten what you bought by the time it shows up. I did something similar from Thailand once, and the box arrived looking like it had been on its own vacation. Honestly, for $35, it's a pretty good deal to avoid airline baggage fees, which are basically a tax on poor planning.

I just taped a list of the contents on the outside.
