Blew $80 on a 'travel towel' that still smelled musty after two trips

I fell for those fancy microfiber travel towels that claim to dry instantly and never smell. Took it to a hostel in Portland last month and by day three it had that wet dog funk I couldn't shake. Tried washing it with vinegar, baking soda, even left it in the sun for a full afternoon. Nothing worked. Ended up grabbing a cheap cotton one from a thrift store for $4 and it's been totally fine. Anyone else had this problem with those expensive quick-dry towels?

My buddy Tom bought one of those expensive ones for a trip to Costa Rica and by day two it smelled like a wet hamster cage. He ended up using it as a seat cover on the bus ride home.

Honestly, "wet hamster cage" is way too accurate. My buddy Dave got one of those expensive packable towels for a camping trip and after one use in a lake it just never dried right. He left it in his trunk for a week and when he opened it up the smell was so bad he just threw the whole towel in the dumpster.
