Can we talk about how a $2 tip at a hostel in Lisbon bought me a whole week of free breakfasts
Last week I was in Lisbon and the hostel wanted 8 euros a day for their breakfast, which is way too much for some bread and cold cuts. I handed the guy at the front desk 2 euros as a tip on day one and asked where the locals eat, and he came back with a hand drawn map of a market two blocks away. Turns out the market has a 1.50 euro coffee and pastry combo, and I ate there all four mornings for less than one hostel breakfast. Then he started waving me past the front desk coffee line and just letting me fill my water bottle from the staff machine. Total spent on breakfast the whole trip was 8 euros. Has anyone else found that a small tip at the desk works better than asking the front desk for advice straight up?
Yes! Tipped a guy 5 bucks at a hostel in Prague and he marked up my map with all the cheap spots tourists never find. Got a huge plate of goulash for like 3 euros and he let me stash my bag there after checkout too. Small tips at the desk are totally the move.
