Chat with a hostel owner in Barcelona made me ditch hotels for dorms
Was talking to this guy Miguel who runs a 12 bed place near La Rambla. He said he pays €3 a night for his water and electric bill because he puts timers on everything and uses a rainwater system for the toilets. Made me realize I was dropping $120 a night on budget hotels when I could get a dorm bed for $25 and use that extra cash on food and tours. Any of you guys found hostels that actually feel clean and private?

Look for hostels that advertise "pod style" beds or have curtains that actually close all the way. I stayed at this one place in Lisbon that had these wooden capsules, felt like a private room even with five other people in there. Also check the reviews specifically for the bathroom situation, if they say "cleaned twice daily" and have individual shower stalls instead of a big open room, you're golden. Bring a dry bag for your toiletries and a small padlock, that combo saved me so many times in sketchy places. Honestly the best ones I found were in Eastern Europe, like this spot in Budapest where they gave you a personal locker big enough for a carry on and a reading light. Just skip the party hostels if you actually want sleep, go for the ones that say "quiet hours" in their description.

Quiet hours" in a hostel description? Lol I didn't even know that was a thing people looked for. I just assumed every hostel was basically a nonstop party until 4am. That Budapest spot with the giant personal locker sounds like a dream though, most places I've been give you a locker barely big enough for a phone and wallet.
