Checked luggage is a budget killer, and I'm done with it for good

I always thought checking a bag was just part of flying, but the fees add up fast. On my last trip to Thailand, the airline wanted $40 each way for a checked suitcase. That money could have paid for a nice meal or a tour instead. Now I only use a small backpack that fits in the overhead bin. This simple change has saved me hundreds of dollars over the years. It also makes getting through airports quicker and easier. Try packing light once, and you'll see how much better it is.

Ryanair's 50 euro bag fee convinced me to pack light.

That 50 euro bag fee is absolutely RIDICULOUS. It's basically a tax for wanting to bring more than a toothbrush. I saw someone once with three jackets on just to avoid paying. You have to become a packing ninja, rolling everything into tiny balls. Ryanair wins because they get your money either way, from the fee or from you buying new clothes at your destination. It's a clever way to make travel more stressful and expensive.
