Friend told me I was wasting money on carry-on only flights

I used to do the whole personal item only thing for every flight, thinking I was saving big. A buddy who travels more than me pointed out I was spending $30 more on laundry at hostels and buying toiletries every trip. I ran the numbers over a year and he was right. Now I just check a bag for longer trips and it ends up cheaper overall. Has anyone else had someone call them out on a habit that wasn't actually saving money?

You really spent a whole year doing laundry math before someone had to tell you that's not saving money, huh? My budget spreadsheet keeps lying to me too, I just refuse to check it.

@spencer_wood yeah that "budget spreadsheet" line hit home for me. I did the EXACT same thing with toiletries. Kept buying those tiny travel shampoos at the airport for like $8 each and telling myself I was saving money. Three trips later I finally added it up and realized I could've just checked a bag for half of what I spent on that stupid stuff.
