Had a hostel worker in Bangkok show me a way to save on laundry that I never thought of
I was staying at this cheap spot near Khao San Road and the laundry service cost more than my bed for the night. This local worker pulled me aside and told me to just hand wash stuff in the sink with dish soap and hang it on the fan. Anyone else got a weird money saving trick from a random stranger while traveling?

Solid trick. I always carry a ziplock bag with some powdered soap now. Throw in clothes, shake it up, rinse in the sink. Dries fast if you roll it in a towel first.

Yeah the sink wash with dish soap works pretty well. I used shampoo once in a pinch and it did the job too. The towel roll trick @eric_johnson mentioned is key though. You gotta really squeeze the water out or it takes forever to dry in a humid room. I've also used a hotel hair dryer on low heat to speed things up when I was in a hurry. Just don't hold it too close or you'll melt the fabric. That tip saved me a bunch of money on a long trip through Southeast Asia.
