I called hostel dorms a scam for 10 years, then a $14 bed in Lisbon proved me wrong
I used to book private rooms only. Extra $40 a night, whatever, I wanted my own bathroom. Last spring a friend talked me into a hostel in Lisbon for 3 nights at $14 a night. I figured I'd hate it. Shared bathroom, 6 strangers snoring, the works.
Turns out the place had free breakfast, a kitchen I could actually cook in, and two guys from Australia who showed me a tram card that cut my transit cost to under $8 for the stay. The dorm was quiet by 11pm. Staff held my bag for free after checkout.
I'm not saying every hostel is good. I got burned by a $9 one in Budapest two years back that smelled like wet carpet. But writing them all off cost me real money for a decade.
What's the cheapest dorm you've actually slept well in, and what city?
That line about writing them all off cost you real money for a decade hits home. I skipped hostels for years thinking I was too old for that scene, then tried one in Porto at 15 a night and slept better than half the hotels I've paid for.
