I finally figured out why my hostel stays always felt sketchy after that incident in Bangkok last summer
Some guy tried to swipe my phone while I was sleeping at a hostel in Khao San Road and now I always book places with those individual lockers under the bed, has anyone else had stuff go missing in those big dorm rooms?

Are you sure it wasn't the mattress itself? I've stayed at a few hostels where the mattress is basically a giant sponge that just absorbs everything, I swear someone's old passport ended up under my pillow once.

Get yourself a small combination lock and a thin carabiner clip... loop the lock through the zipper pulls on your backpack or daybag and clip it to the bed frame right next to your head. That way nobody can slip your bag out without shaking the whole bunk. Also learned the hard way to keep my phone and wallet inside my pillowcase while I sleep, not just under the pillow.
