I finally figured out why my hostel stays kept costing more than hotels
Three years ago I was paying $45 a night for a shared dorm in Berlin with a broken locker and a guy snoring like a chainsaw. Then I switched to staying just outside the city center in a basic hotel for $40 and got free breakfast and my own bathroom. Does anyone else find that the cheap hostels near the main attractions are actually ripping you off?

Right? I learned that lesson the hard way too. Paying extra for a locker that doesn't even lock is just adding insult to injury. Hostels near the center are basically a scam for solo travelers.

@faith_schmidt Did that locker situation happen to you at a popular chain hostel or a smaller one? Curious if the big names are just as bad as the cheap places for that stuff.
