I thought paying for a luggage scale was a waste of $15

I was packing for a week in Lisbon and almost didn't buy one. At the airport, my bag was 3 pounds over. The airline wanted $100. I pulled out the little scale, took out a pair of shoes, and saved the fee right there. It paid for itself seven times over in one trip. Has anyone else had a small purchase save them from a huge fee?

Ever try to guess the weight by just lifting your bag? I did that once and was off by like eight pounds. Had to do the walk of shame at check-in while I pulled out a bunch of sweaters.
