Maybe it's just me but I think the 'pack only a carry-on' rule for cheap flights is overrated
I was in line at the Denver airport last year, and this guy ahead of me was arguing with the gate agent because his backpack was too big. He was trying to save on a checked bag fee, but they made him gate-check it anyway for $75. He turned to me and said, 'I followed the hack, but it cost me more.' That stuck with me. I get the idea, but if you're flying a budget airline with strict rules, you can easily mess up the size or weight and get hit with a bigger fee at the gate. For my trip to Chicago, I just paid the $30 to check a bag online when I booked. It was one less thing to worry about, and I knew the exact cost upfront. Has anyone else had a budget airline catch them with a bag that was technically too big?

My last Frontier flight had a bin sizer right at the gate. Watched three people get popped for oversized bags in ten minutes. Honestly, the stress of trying to cram everything into a tiny bag just isn't worth the savings for me. I'd rather pay the checked bag fee when I book and actually enjoy my vacation. Those gate agents have zero chill about the rules.

My cousin got married in Phoenix and I flew Spirit. I measured my bag at home with a tape measure, but their metal bin at the gate was just a tiny bit smaller. The agent made me pay $99 to check it right there. I was so mad I almost missed my flight arguing about it. Now I just check a bag if I'm flying those airlines, it's cheaper than the surprise fee. Do you think they make those bins on purpose so you fail?
