My $9 hostel in Lisbon turned out to be a 40 minute bus ride from the actual city
Booked a place in Lisbon for $9 a night back in March and felt like a genius until I looked at the map on the bus ride in from the airport. It was in a suburb called Amadora, and the "free breakfast" was one stale roll and instant coffee. I ended up spending $6 a day on buses just to get into the city, which ate my whole savings. After two days I did the math and moved to a $22 hostel right in Alfama, and it actually came out cheaper once I stopped paying for transit. Lesson was to always check the distance to the center before booking, not just the price. Anyone got a good way to spot these fake cheap listings before you pay?
