My cousin called my packing method 'paying for extra weight'

I used to pack a full checked bag for every trip, even a weekend in Chicago, because I wanted options. She pointed out I was basically paying $35 each way to bring clothes I never wore. Now I force myself into a carry-on, and I've saved over $200 this year on baggage fees alone. What's one thing you used to pack that you always leave behind now?

Used to bring three pairs of shoes for a two day trip, which is just sad lol.

Feel your pain, @kevin_roberts41. I once packed a whole separate bag just for shoes for a weekend. Had my walking sneakers, my nicer dinner shoes, and then a pair of sandals just in case the hotel had a pool I might not even use. Spent more time deciding on footwear than what clothes to bring. Now I just wear my most comfy pair and call it a day, even if they don't match everything perfectly.

Did you ever try to talk yourself out of bringing a pair of shoes you knew deep down you wouldn't wear? I do that all the time. Last trip I packed a beat-up pair of rain boots "just in case" even though the forecast was clear and sunny for three days straight. They took up half my suitcase and I never even touched them. Now I try to stick to one pair of shoes that can handle a little bit of everything, but it feels like giving up a part of my planning soul.
