My hostel bunk bed collapsed at 3 AM in Barcelona

I was sound asleep in a cheap hostel last Tuesday when the whole wooden frame just gave out underneath me. I crashed to the floor with a huge bang, tangled in sheets and a very confused roommate. The manager just shrugged and said 'it happens' and gave me a thin mattress to put directly on the floor. Has anyone else had furniture just disintegrate on them while traveling?

That "it happens" shrug is the real story. It shows how hostels treat cheap furniture as disposable, and by extension, the people sleeping on it. They budget for breakage instead of safety, knowing travelers won't stick around to complain. Your crash wasn't an accident, it was a cost saving measure.

Yeah that "budget for breakage instead of safety" line hit close to home. I once stayed at a place in Portugal where the bunk bed ladder just came off in my hand on the first night. Told the guy at the front desk and he handed me a roll of duct tape with a straight face. So I taped it back on and used it for the rest of the week like some kind of janky jungle gym. Definitely felt like they were betting I wouldn't make a scene over it. And they were right, I just ate the cost of another cheap hostel and moved on. Funny how we all just accept falling through furniture as part of the budget travel experience.

Watched my friend slide right off a plastic chair in Rome when it just snapped at the legs... like it was made of crackers. The cafe owner dragged it away and pointed to another wobbly one without a word. We just drank our coffee standing up.
