My uncle swore by the 'pack light, buy there' method and he was right

My uncle Tom was a flight attendant for 30 years and always told me to never check a bag and just buy whatever I need when I land. Last year I flew to Portland for 4 days with just a backpack and bought a cheap hoodie and toiletries at a Walgreens near my hotel. Spent like $40 total and saved $60 in baggage fees. But the real win was not having to wait at the carousel or worry about lost luggage. Has anyone else tried this and had it backfire on them?

Watched a friend buy a coat in Chicago that fell apart after two wears, so there's your risk.

Gotta disagree with you there. One bad coat from one store doesn't mean all jackets are risky. Chicago winters are brutal, and someone probably bought the cheapest thing they could find. I've had a $60 parka from Target that's lasted me three winters and still keeps me dry. The trick is looking at the material and stitching, not just the price tag or brand name. Sounds like your friend just got unlucky or picked a dud, but that happens with anything you buy. I'd still take the gamble on a good coat over freezing my butt off anyway.
