Paying for a checked bag vs. a carry-on backpack for a week in Lisbon
I just got back from a week in Portugal and tried something new. For years, I always paid the 60 euro fee to check a normal suitcase. This time, I forced myself to pack everything into a 40 liter hiking backpack that fits under the seat. The difference was huge. Not only did I save the bag fee, but I also skipped the 45 minute wait at the luggage carousel in Lisbon. I could walk straight off the plane and onto the metro. Packing was tight, but I did laundry once at my hostel for 4 euros. All told, I saved over 100 euros on fees and time. Has anyone else made the switch to one-bag travel for a full week trip? What's your best tip for packing light?

Switched to a 40L bag last year. Rolling clothes instead of folding saved so much space.
