Spent two months booking hostels through the wrong app and lost $80 in fees

I kept using a generic booking site for hostels in Thailand last summer and paid an extra $12 per night in hidden service charges. After 7 hostels, my buddy showed me how Hostelworld actually compares prices and has free cancellation on most places. Anyone else find out they were overpaying through the wrong platform and switch to a better one?

I used Booking.com for a month in Vietnam before I realized they were marking up prices by like 15 bucks a night compared to just using Agoda directly. Once I switched I saved close to $100 total and got better cancellation rules too.

Wonder if they're both owned by the same parent company and just testing prices.
