Swapped my hostel bunk for a homestay in Medellin and I'm not going back
I always thought hostels were the only way to save money traveling, but a local guy in Medellin offered me a room for $12 a night with free breakfast. After two weeks of noisy dorms and slow wifi, the quiet space and home-cooked meals actually cost less than my hostel per week. Has anyone else tried homestays instead of hostels for budget trips?

Homestays ended up saving my broke ass too, though my Spanish is so bad the grandma just feeds me and laughs at my hand gestures. Best $12 I ever spent, and the only noise is her telenovelas blasting at 6am.

Ha, the telenovela wake up call is real. At least you know she cares enough to include you in her morning routine. That $12 is probably the best money you've ever spent.
