That $23 hostel in Bangkok turned into a $400 mistake and I'm still mad about the math
So I finally added up every single thing I spent on my trip to Southeast Asia in March and the grand total was $1,847 for 18 days. Sounds like a win right? Except here's the thing that's been eating at me. I bragged to my buddy Dave about finding a $23 a night hostel in Bangkok, and he asked me one simple question. How much did you spend on taxis because you picked the place way out by the airport? I went back through my bank app and it was $210 in cab rides over six days because the hostel was nowhere near the Skytrain or the Khao San area. Then I did the math on what a $45 place near the action would have cost and it came out cheaper overall, plus I wouldn't have wasted 9 hours of my trip sitting in traffic. I felt so smug about that nightly rate that I completely ignored the location tax, and that's the real budget killer nobody warns you about. Has anyone else gotten burned by chasing the lowest nightly price and blowing the savings somewhere dumber?
