The bus from Chiang Mai to Pai broke down at 2am and taught me to always carry small bills
I was on an overnight bus from Chiang Mai to Pai two years ago when the engine just quit around 2am on a mountain road. The driver got out, poked around for a bit, and shrugged. No AC, no lights, and a bunch of confused tourists sitting in the dark. The real problem came after we all got shuffled onto a second bus around 4am. The new driver wanted 200 baht from each of us for the "transfer" and nobody had small bills because we'd all broken them at 7-Eleven earlier. I ended up paying 500 baht for a 60 baht ride because I only had big notes in my money belt. Now I keep a stack of 20s and 50s in my sock for exactly this kind of mess. Has anyone else gotten squeezed on a roadside bus swap, or did I just pick the wrong company?
