Warning: I chose a 6 hour layover in Lisbon to save $200 and it was a mixed bag
I was booking a flight to Barcelona and had to pick between a direct flight for $650 or a route with a long stop in Lisbon for only $450. I took the cheaper one thinking I could just explore the airport. The layover was actually long enough to take the train into the city for a quick look, which was amazing. But I was so tired by the time I got to Barcelona that I lost a whole day just sleeping. Has anyone else tried a super long layover to save cash and actually made it work without being wrecked?

Man my buddy did this exact thing in Istanbul once. He left the airport and saw the Blue Mosque and had this incredible meal, said it was the best part of his whole trip. But he also said the jet lag hit him like a truck two days later and he slept through a whole tour he already paid for. That extra city visit is a cool bonus, but man you really pay for it later with your energy.

and honestly what finally worked for me was taking a super short nap on the plane and then drinking a ton of water. i had a 7 hour layover in zurich once and i was so scared of being dead tired later but i forced myself to stay awake the whole time in the city by just walking constantly and not sitting down anywhere for too long. when i got to my final destination i crashed at like 8pm local time but i woke up at 6am the next day feeling pretty good. the biggest thing was not letting myself sleep on the plane at all during the second leg cause that just messes everything up worse.
