Warning: That $15 bus ticket from Bangkok to Chiang Mai was a huge mistake

I thought I was being smart saving money, but the bus had no AC and broke down for 4 hours in the middle of the night. The extra $20 for a train seat would have saved me a whole day of being miserable. Has anyone else had a bad experience with a specific budget bus company in Thailand?

Avoiding a whole company over one bad bus ride seems a bit much, doesn't it? They all have off days. What even happened?
