Why does nobody talk about budget hotel location pitfalls?

I saved on a hotel but wasted money on cabs, so I look for places near public transport now.

Ugh, airport hotels are the worst for this. You think you're being smart staying near the terminal, but then you're a thirty dollar cab ride from any actual food. The savings illusion is real.

Booked a cheap beach hotel once thinking it was a steal. Turned out to be a long walk from any bus stop, and we always needed cabs to get food. The room discount got totally eaten up by transport fees.

My friend did that with a rental car last year, saved fifty bucks online but paid double in parking. Wren_martin70 is right about the savings illusion, it's like every budget choice has a hidden tax.
