My aunt said to always buy the cheapest groceries, but that backfired hard
She swore by the dollar store for pantry stuff. Bought a $1 jar of peanut butter there last month. It tasted like wax and I threw most of it out. Now I see spending a bit more on staples I'll actually eat saves money. Anyone else have cheap advice that cost them more?

Ugh, YES. I bought the absolute cheapest toilet paper once. It was like sandpaper, and we used SO much more of it trying to get the job done. Ended up running out twice as fast, so the "savings" were totally fake. Never again.

My dad did the same thing with garbage bags once. Bought the thinnest ones from the dollar store and they ripped every single time we took the trash out. By the end of the week we had used three whole boxes trying to get the mess contained. Ended up spending double what a good roll would've cost.

My uncle insisted on the cheapest motor oil for his old truck. The engine seized up a year later, costing way more than a few extra dollars per oil change. Sometimes cutting corners just cuts the life out of things.
