My grocery budget blew up when my freezer died last Tuesday

I was at my apartment in Springfield when I heard the weird hum stop and found everything thawing. I had to spend $150 on a cooler and ice to save about $300 worth of meat and frozen veggies I'd bought on sale. Has anyone else had a major appliance fail and how did you handle the extra cost without wrecking your monthly plan?

Yeah, that emergency fund tip is key. I keep a separate small savings bucket just for home stuff now, so a broken appliance doesn't totally wipe out my main safety net.

That cooler and ice move was smart, saved you half your stuff. I had a fridge die on me last year. The big thing is checking if your renters or home insurance has appliance coverage. Mine didn't, but some do. I had to pull from my emergency fund, which is exactly what that money is for. After that, I started setting aside a small amount each month just for appliance repairs.
