My grocery store receipt had a $40 mistake and I got it fixed

I was at the Safeway on Main Street yesterday, checking out with my weekly haul. The cashier scanned a pack of chicken twice by accident, adding an extra $14.99 to my total. I caught it right there at the register, showed her the receipt, and she called the manager over. They voided the item and gave me a corrected receipt on the spot, saving me the money. Has anyone else had to watch the scanner like a hawk lately?

My local Kroger had a news segment last month about scanner accuracy. They found errors on about 1 in 20 items during an audit, mostly overcharges. It's usually stuff like a sale price not ringing up or an item being weighed wrong. I make a point to watch the screen the whole time now and keep the weekly ad open on my phone. It's a pain, but it saves money.

Wow, that's wild but good you caught it. My friend had something similar happen with a bag of apples being charged as organic when they were regular, a huge price difference. She didn't notice until she got home and had to go all the way back, which was a hassle. It totally lines up with what @bencampbell said about checking the screen the whole time, because those mistakes are way too common now. She's become one of those people who holds up the line double-checking every item, but honestly, who can blame her? Stores need to get their systems right if they want us to trust the prices.
