My old freezer died and I saved $80 with a hairdryer

My chest freezer in the garage stopped cooling last Thursday... I was ready to toss it and buy a new one until my neighbor came over. He pointed out the drain hole was frozen solid, so I grabbed my hairdryer and melted the ice in about 10 minutes. Worked perfect, saved me around $80 on a replacement. Anybody else fixed something dumb like that with basic tools?

And the thing is, most people don't realize how often those little drain holes freeze up. I used to work at a hardware store years ago and we'd see it every winter. People would come in ready to drop $500 on a new fridge when all they really needed was a wire coat hanger and a few minutes to clear the ice. Same goes for window AC units with the little drain plugs getting clogged. A quick blast with compressed air or even a stiff pipe cleaner works wonders. It's amazing what a little maintenance can save you, especially when most modern appliances are built to be thrown away rather than fixed.

Maybe it's just me but @allen.amy some of those new fridges are actually worth fixing.
