Old water heater blew a gasket last night at 2am, dumped 40 gallons in my basement

My 14-year-old Rheem finally gave out and flooded the utility room, cost me $220 for a new one and 3 hours of shop-vac work, anyone else have a major appliance fail out of nowhere without warning signs?

Did you have any rust or corrosion around the drain valve or the connections before it let go? I ask because mine had this orange ring starting at the bottom a couple months before the tank actually popped, but I just figured it was from the hard water. Ended up being the first sign the liner was going. Now I check every water heater I see for that orange stain, its a dead giveaway. How long did yours take to shop-vac out?

Maybe it's not that deep though. I've had hard water stains that looked exactly like rust for years and the water heater never gave me any trouble. Could just be mineral buildup that scrubs off easy enough.
