Saw a couple arguing over a grocery bill in the checkout line at my local Kroger
I was picking up some basics last Friday evening and got stuck behind a young couple. They had a full cart and were going through each item with the cashier, asking her to take things off. I heard the man say, 'We agreed on $150 for the week, and we're already at $180.' The woman looked upset and said, 'But we need these things, and it's just a little over.' They ended up putting back about $35 worth of stuff, mostly snacks and a fancy cheese. It made me think about two ways to budget for food. Some people say you should set a hard weekly limit and stick to it, no matter what. Others think you should buy what you need and just try to keep the whole month's spending low, even if one week is high. I've always done the weekly limit, but seeing their stress made me wonder if the monthly way is less of a headache. What's your take on the best method for grocery budgeting?

Is it really worth that much stress over thirty bucks? Budgets should help your life, not ruin a grocery trip. I'd rather be a little flexible and avoid a public fight.

Well, that thirty bucks adds up fast though. It's not just one trip, it's every trip. That's how you blow a budget.
