Stop buying bulk rice without checking the bag date first

I grabbed a 20 pound bag of jasmine rice at Costco last month for $14 and when I opened it up, it had pantry moths inside. Turns out it was already 8 months old on the shelf. Now I always flip the bag over and look for the packed on date before I buy. Anyone else dealt with stale bulk goods messing up your meal prep budget?

Honestly I get why you're frustrated with the bugs but I think checking the date is kind of overblown. Rice lasts for years if stored right, and those moths can get into a bag at any point even if it was packed yesterday. I buy big bags of rice all the time from Aldi and never look at the date, and the only time I had an issue was when I left a bag open in my pantry too long. To me the real trick is to dump your rice into a sealed container with a tight lid as soon as you get home. That stops bugs from getting in and keeps the rice fresh way past any date on the bag. Eight months on a shelf is nothing for dry goods. You probably just got unlucky with a bad seal or something.

Flip the bag over, check the date, and still get moths? Sounds like the rice is just trying to start its own family before you cook it.
