Switching to a cash envelope for my food budget stopped the overspending

I was always going over my $400 monthly food budget by about $75, so last month I took out the cash and put it in an envelope. Having to hand over the real money made me think twice about extra snacks and I ended up with $20 left over. Has anyone else tried this method for a specific spending area that was hard to control?

Wait, your food budget is only $400 a month? That's the part that blows my mind, how do you even manage that? I'm over here spending that much on just takeout. The cash envelope trick is smart though, I should try it for my coffee habit. Did you have to cut out a lot of fresh stuff to hit that number?

Only $400 a month" for food, is that really such a shocker for one person?
