Telling people to cancel every subscription is lazy advice and it cost me $340
Last January I did the whole "cancel everything" challenge from a YouTube video. Killed Netflix, Spotify, my gym, all of it. Saved $85 a month, felt like a genius for about 6 weeks.
Then I did the math on what replaced them. Bought 3 books a month at $18 each. Started driving to the library twice a week, that's $12 in gas. My gym membership was $22 and I replaced it with a $60 pair of running shoes plus a knee brace after I hurt myself running on sidewalks. Netflix gone meant I bought 2 movies on demand for $15 total when my kid was sick.
By July I was $340 in the hole compared to just keeping the stuff I actually used. The whole "cut everything" thing only works if you cut stuff you don't touch. I kept Spotify and the gym now. Cancelled the $9 app I forgot about and a $14 storage unit instead. That's the real win.
Curious if anyone else did the mass cancel thing and ended up paying more. What did you actually keep?
