Took me 11 months to cancel a $9.99 gym membership in Denver

I signed up at a gym on Colfax in Denver back in January of last year, used it twice, and figured canceling would take one phone call. It took 11 months. First they said I had to mail a letter, then they said the letter got lost, then they claimed I needed to come in person during hours when a manager was there, which was basically never. I finally just called my bank and blocked the charge, which took 10 minutes. Has anyone actually canceled a gym without moving or faking their own death?
