My habit tracker went from messy to clean in 3 weeks after I stopped using colors

I used to color code everything in my bullet journal but it just turned into a rainbow mess that told me nothing. Once I switched to simple dots and X marks, I actually started seeing patterns in my sleep and water intake for the first time. Has anyone else found that less decoration actually helps you stick with tracking?

Not gonna lie, I went the exact opposite direction with mine (lol) but now I'm curious. When you switched to dots and X marks, did you find yourself checking in more often or less? Like, with the colors I'd get distracted picking the right highlighter shade and actually open my bujo less, so I'm wondering if the boring simplicity tricks you into being more consistent. The sleep and water patterns specifically interest me because those are two things I always struggle to track long term.

Actually switching to dots made me check way less often since plain marks feel too tedious to bother with.
