A buddy of mine tried this same thing at a local cafe last month. She spent like an hour setting up her whole planner with colored pens and washi tape. The barista walked over, looked at it, and just said "cool doodles" before walking away. She was so embarrassed she packed up and left immediately. I mean, at least your barista actually cared enough to ask about it. Coffee shop work sessions are a gamble sometimes, you never know who you'll get.

Give the barista a little credit, at least "cool doodles" isn't an insult, just a clueless observation. Your friend's story is funnier anyway, because that's the kind of thing that sticks with you for years. I bet she still cringes every time she sees a roll of washi tape in the store. Coffee shop staff either treat you like a regular or like you're part of the furniture, there's no in between.
