Unpopular opinion: buying a dotted notebook before figuring out your layout is backwards
I spent almost 3 weeks trying to force a daily log system into this $28 dotted Leuchtturm I grabbed at a shop in Denver, and it never clicked. Then I finally just drew my spreads on plain printer paper for a few days first, figured out I only really need a weekly and a running task list, and suddenly everything made sense. Felt pretty dumb copying that over into the actual notebook after all that time. Now I have 40 wasted pages up front that I just leave blank because it bugs me to look at them. Does anyone else sketch layouts on scrap paper first, or am I just making extra work for myself?
Wait, why do you feel dumb about it though? That's literally the smart way to do it. You figured out your system before wrecking the good paper, that's not backwards at all, that's just testing before you commit. The only thing I'd push back on is leaving those 40 pages blank, you can still use them for something like a master task list or a year at a glance or even tape in a pic and some notes so it doesn't feel wasted. And honestly $28 Leuchtturms are too expensive to gamble on a layout that might not work, so doing a rough draft on printer paper first saves you from ripping out pages later. The blank pages bugging you is more of a you thing than an actual problem, most people never even fill their notebooks anyway.
