Found a flyer for a local band from 1998 on a bulletin board behind the grocery store
I was grabbing a coffee at that little cafe on Main Street last week and saw this beat up bulletin board they've got near the napkin station. Mixed in with all the yoga ads and missing cat photos was this faded flyer for a band called "The Rusty Nails" playing at The VFW hall on a Friday night in August 1998. Had a hand drawn logo and everything. Made me remember when my buddy and I would spend all week picking which show to see from the boards at the laundromat or the library. No social media, just paper and staples. You had to actually go places to find out what was happening. Does anyone else miss that feeling of discovery from walking around town and finding something cool taped up?

The part about "just paper and staples" hit me hard. I read an article a while back about how flyer culture basically created entire music scenes in the 90s. It was wild how you'd find a show flyer tucked under a windshield wiper or taped to a phone pole and suddenly your whole Friday night was planned. My older brother had a massive collection of these things he pulled off boards around town. He kept them in a shoebox under his bed for years. There was something special about the mystery of not knowing exactly what you were getting into until you showed up at some random VFW hall or church basement.

The shoebox under the bed part got me, because that was basically a physical hard drive full of memories nobody can access today.
