Shoutout to the laundromat on 5th that taped a 'lost sock' flyer with 14 socks on it
I walk past the Spin Cycle laundromat on 5th street every Tuesday on my way to the hardware store, and last week there was a new flyer taped to the window that made me stop. It was a hand drawn picture of 14 different socks, each one labeled with a date going back to March. The owner, an older guy named Ray, must have been collecting them from the lost and found bin for months. I went inside to ask about it and he said people keep leaving single socks behind, so he started the flyer as a joke. He told me nobody has claimed a single one yet, but three people have added their own missing sock drawings to the bottom of the page. What got me is that someone taped a tiny sock shaped cookie to the flyer on Sunday, and Ray has no idea who did it. I stood there for like ten minutes just reading the little notes people had written next to each sock. Has anyone else seen a bulletin board where the joke took on a life of its own like this? I want to know if Ray's flyer is living its best life somewhere on the internet.
14 socks going back to March is less a lost and found and more a slow motion break up with the whole concept of pairs. Ray should just lean in and start charging admission, because a cookie tribute is the point where a joke stops being a joke and becomes a tourist spot. Somewhere out there a sock is missing its buddy and honestly the flyer is doing more for that sock than the dryer ever did.
