Vent: My buddy said to ignore the 'free kittens' flyer at the laundromat

He told me it was always a scam for rehoming fees, but I called the number last week and got the sweetest tabby for zero dollars, just had to promise a good home. Now I've got a new cat and my friend's 'always right' attitude is officially busted. Anyone actually had a bad experience with those handwritten pet ads?

Funny how those flyers work out sometimes. My neighbor got a dog from a gas station bulletin board that way, no money changed hands. The real hidden cost was the vet bills later, because the people giving it away hadn't done any shots or checkups. So you might get a free pet, but you're also taking on whatever problems come with it, which the old owners might not mention. Your buddy was wrong about the scam part, but his worry wasn't totally crazy either.

Totally agree with you and @palmer.ryan. Got a "free" cat once, cost me a fortune in ear mites.

Ask if your neighbor's dog had any other issues pop up later, @robertsmith. That initial vet bill is one thing, but long term health problems from bad breeding or neglect can really add up. Makes you wonder what else people leave out on those free flyers.
