Rant: the diner on Route 9 in Poughkeepsie serves burnt grilled cheese on purpose and calls it "charred"
Stopped at this little diner off Route 9 in Poughkeepsie on a Tuesday because my sister swears by their grilled cheese. What came out was black on one side, like actually black, and when I asked the waitress she said "that's the char, hon, that's how we do it." I've made plenty of sad sandwiches in my own kitchen, that's why I hang out here, but this was a kitchen doing it on purpose and charging $11 for it. Everyone at the table acted like I was the weird one for wanting my bread golden instead of carbon. I get that a little char adds flavor, sure, but there's a line between toasted and torched and this place sprinted past it. My sister said the burnt part is "the best bite" and I just sat there chewing on what tasted like a campfire. Am I crazy here, or is calling burnt food a style just a way to sell mistakes at full price? Would love to hear if anyone else has run into a spot that does this, because I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.
