Spent $12 on a cast iron grill press and it turned my burger night into a smoke show
I grabbed a $12 cast iron press at a flea market in Tulsa last spring and figured it would be great for smash burgers. Turns out I pressed too hard on a patty and the grease hit the coil so fast my whole apartment smelled like burnt regret for 2 days. My smoke alarm in the hallway went off twice and my neighbor knocked to ask if I was grilling inside. Now I only use it when the window is open, but I still love the crust it gives. Has anyone else had a cheap tool that works great but comes with one big catch like that?

My $15 waffle maker from Goodwill is the same deal. Makes perfect waffles but the nonstick is peeling off like a bad sunburn, so every waffle comes with a side of mystery coating. My wife calls it my "science experiment breakfast" and refuses to eat anything that comes out of it. Learned real quick to only use it when she's not home, which is basically never now. Would I throw it out? Not a chance. That thing has seen me through way too many Sunday mornings.
