Vent: My holiday roast turned into a smoke detector symphony in under 4 minutes

Last Sunday I tried a slow cooker pot roast recipe my sister swore by. I seared the chuck roast in a cast iron skillet, cranked the heat too high, and walked to the garage to grab a beer. Came back to black smoke rolling out of the kitchen and the alarm going off in three rooms. The meat looked like charcoal briquettes, and I ended up ordering pizza for five people at 6:45 PM. My sister said she never uses that skillet above medium, but who reads those notes first time? Anyone else found out the hard way that cast iron holds heat way longer than you expect?
