I used to think a hand saw was fine for breaking down beef quarters, but a band saw changed my whole week.

My coworker Mike finally convinced me to use the shop's band saw last Monday, and I broke down a 600-pound side in half the time with way less shoulder ache. The clean cuts on the chine bones were a total game changer. Anyone else make a switch like that and wonder why they waited so long?

What kind of hand saw were you even using before that made you think it was okay? I can't imagine the fight you had with the pelvis and spine using just a hand saw. Did you have to sharpen it halfway through every quarter?

It was a cheap hardware store saw, the kind that comes in a plastic bag. The teeth were dull before I even started. You're right about the fight, it was brutal. The bone just gums up the blade and you have to force it. Sharpening it didn't help much, just made a bad tool slightly less terrible. Never doing that again.
