My band saw blade blew apart mid cut on a 40 lb order and I need to figure out why
Last Tuesday I was breaking down a whole ribeye for a restaurant order, about 40 lbs total, and halfway through the saw blade just let go. Not a little slip, I mean it snapped and whipped the cover hard enough to scare the daylights out of me. I checked the tension before I started like I always do, and the guides looked fine, so I figured it was just a bad blade. Put on a new one from the same box and it cut fine for maybe ten minutes, then started wandering left on its own. Now I'm wondering if the box sat in a damp corner of the shop too long, or if my upper wheel bearing is going and I just can't feel it by hand. I've been running this saw for six years and this is the first time anything like this has happened. Does anyone here check their wheel bearings on a schedule, or do you just wait until something like this tells you?
Did the saw sit unused for a while before this happened? If the blade was coiled tight in that box for months, the back edge can take a set and start climbing the wheel no matter how good your tension is. Also check the tires, a worn or slick tire will let a blade wander even when the bearings feel okay by hand.
