Walk-in cooler door handle snapped off mid-rush on Saturday

We were slammed before the lunch crowd at our shop off Route 9 in Hadley when the push bar on the SM-2 walk-in just gave way. The latch flew apart and the door swung shut behind me, leaving a customer waiting at the counter and me stuck holding a quarter beef. I had to wedge my boot in the gap and yell for my apprentice to grab a screwdriver. Has anyone else had one of these fail without warning, and did you replace the whole handle assembly or just the spring kit?
