Hot take: the existential dread meme is the lazy version of the butter robot
Everyone keeps making the same joke about the robot staring into space with dark eyes and sad music, but that's not what the scene is about. The real comedy is how simple his question is, and how Rick's answer is even simpler. I've been editing clips for 2 years now, and the best ones lean into the deadpan delivery and the exact pause before Rick says 'Pass the butter.' That timing is everything. A slow zoom with a sighing synth track just turns a sharp joke into a melodrama, and it misses why we laugh in the first place. Check the original episode from season 1, episode 8, around the 11 minute mark, and you'll see what I mean. Am I the only one who thinks the overdone sad edits actually kill the humor instead of adding depth?
