A guy at a garage sale in Tulsa handed me his 30 year old Estwing and said 'feel the handle,' and that's when I got it
I was at a moving sale in Tulsa about 4 months ago, just killing time before lunch, and this older guy had a whole table of old hand tools out front. I picked up his framing hammer mostly to be polite, and he said 'feel the handle, go on.' I did, and I swear it was worn down into the shape of his hand, smooth as a river rock, and he told me he'd swung that same hammer on job sites since 1991. It hit me right there that I'd gone through 3 or 4 hammers in half that time, always chasing whatever was on sale, and none of them ever felt like anything in my grip. So I quit buying tools on impulse after that and started waiting for the good stuff, even if it means saving up for a while or hunting through estate sales. Last month I finally picked up a used Estwing of my own for $22 and I can already tell the difference. My question is, how do you all decide when a used tool is worth grabbing versus when it's just somebody's worn out junk? I keep second guessing myself at these sales.
