PSA: my 12 dollar kettle died after 3 years and it made me think about stuff I never worried about before
I had a cheap electric kettle from a big box store that gave out last Tuesday, mid boil, with a little pop and a burnt smell. I was annoyed for about a minute, then I realized it lasted 3 years of daily use and cost me 12 bucks, so that's like a penny a day. For a while I was one of those people who turns their nose up at anything not built like a tank, but honestly I was replacing that kettle with another 12 dollar one the same week. What clicked for me is that BIFL does not have to mean buy once, cry once for every single thing in your kitchen. Sometimes the math on a cheap thing that lasts a few years is just better, and chasing a 90 dollar kettle to boil water felt silly once I ran the numbers. Anyone else here draw a line somewhere on what is worth buying for life and what is fine to just replace?
