Appreciation post: started cutting all my dados with a router jig instead of the table saw and my joints finally fit right
I picked up a simple router jig at a garage sale in Sacramento for $25 about two months ago and figured it would just sit on the shelf. Last Tuesday I cut 14 shelf dados with it on a maple bookcase and every single one came out dead flat with no chipout. Turns out my table saw blade was burning the plywood and I kept blaming the wood instead of the setup. The jig takes longer to clamp but I am not fighting tearout anymore. Anyone else switch over to a router for dados or am I late to this one?
The part about blaming the wood instead of the setup hits home. I did the same thing for years, kept buying nicer plywood thinking the cheap stuff was the problem. Here is an angle nobody talks about though. A router jig is only as good as your bit, and a lot of guys fight tearout because they are running a straight two flute bit when a downcut spiral or a compression bit does the job way better. Half the chipout people blame on the table saw or the jig is really just the wrong bit spinning the wrong direction at the top of the cut. So yeah the jig fixed your dados, but if you ever get weird fuzz on the edges again, look at the bit before you blame anything else.
